The society is headquartered in the Benson Hammond House. Located on a corner of BWI Marshall Airport, the house is a restored mid-19th century farmhouse. The three story house contains rooms restored with period furnishings as well as a museum county history and one of the finest antique doll collections. We operate in partnership with the Anne Arundel County Genealogical Society, the Kuethe Library at 5 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie. The library has a collection of local and regional history and genealogical resources.

A part of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, this organization focuses on patriotic endeavors and historic preservation. The Chapter owns the Rising Sun Inn, a significant 18th century building on General's Highway (MD 178) in the county. A National Historic Landmark on the banks of the South River, minutes from Annapolis, the house at London Town shares a dramatic waterfront setting with an eight-acre woodland garden. The historical and horticultural resources at London Town House & Gardens are managed by the London Town Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation & Parks. The nonprofit London Town Foundation is overseen by an 18-member board and lists over 300 members. Members support the Foundation with contributions, in-kind donations, and volunteer time. Programming offered by the London Town Foundation range from lectures to hands-on demonstrations, to field trips for 1,200 school children each year.

Founded in 1871, the Baltimore Chapter of the American Institute of Architects is the third oldest in the country. AIA Baltimore advances the architecture profession through its code of ethics, continuing education, public service initiatives, and camaraderie. All of its approximately 30 programs and exhibits each year are open to the public. The AIA Baltimore Bookstore carries titles in architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, landscape design, Baltimore and related fields. Public hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A charitable non-profit organization established, in part, to promote an understanding and appreciation of architecture in the Baltimore region. Among its programs are monthly walking tours of Mt. Vernon and Federal Hill. Other tours are available on request. The organization sponsors yearly lectures at the Walters Art Gallery and the historic architect’s roundtable, affectionately dubbed the “dead architect’s society.”

The Painted Screen Society of Baltimore, Inc. was established in 1985 to preserve and promote screen painting and other related rowhouse arts found in Baltimore’s neighborhoods. The Society, based in the East Baltimore community of Canton conducts workshops and public programs which keep traditional expressions in the public programs which keep traditional expressions in the public eye. The timeless and much acclaimed film The Screen Painters is one of the organization’s enduring products.

The Baltimore County Historical Trust, Inc. is a countywide clearing house for preservation information and provides various types of educational services. The BCHT is the designated advisory organization of the Maryland Historical Trust for Baltimore County. Annually, the group provides grants to local applicants to assist with restoration, research, and educational projects. The BCHT presents special Preservation Awards to deserving individuals in the county for preservation projects.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission was established in 1976 by the County Council to list buildings and districts deserving legal protection. The Commission holds public hearings to establish a Preliminary Landmarks List to forward to the County Executive. The Commission also reviews building permits involving any of the listed properties. The Choptank River Heritage Center, located in West Denton (on Maryland's Eastern Shore), represents a working 19th century riverfront landscape including a National Register Warehouse and Wharves, a National Register Vessel—Chesapeake Bay Skipjack F. C Lewis, Jr., and a replica steamboat terminal facility built by the Maryland Steamboat Company in 1883—the Joppa Steamboat Wharf. The Joppa Steamboat Wharf interprets “Riverine Trade” on the Great Choptank River and the museum's exhibits represent a unique opportunity for the interpretation and preservation of one of the state’s vanishing cultural resources—an authentic, “working” riverfront wharf setting. The museum is a National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Gateways site (The Wharves at Choptank Crossing) as well the sponsoring organization for a NPS Gateways Water Trail (The Choptank & Tuckahoe Rivers Water Trail) which provides a web-based River Guide for exploring the respective rivers. Preservation Maryland, founded in 1931, is the state’s oldest historic preservation organization. Its early activities were dedicated to preserving historic properties associated with well known people and events in Maryland’s history. More recently, Preservation Maryland has concentrated on assisting with various preservation efforts at both the local and state levels through advocacy, outreach, and funding programs.

This consortium, under the aegis of the Prince George’s County Historical Society, seeks to rally the limited resources of 23 sites open in the county to provide the most effective means of offering facilities, collections, and programs to the education and enjoyment of the public. Their Passport to History proved highly effective. A marketing brochure is underway.

Created in 1984, SMA was created to fill a need for educational and technical advise to small museums in Maryland and contiguous states. It is committed to helping small museums make the most of limited resources, and to promote the growth of professional standards among their boards, and paid and volunteer staff. It offers an annual conference in February, sponsors several summer workshops, provides technical papers/services, and coordinates/administers MHT’s museum consultant/services grants.

The 1,000 Friends of Maryland, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation which exists to mobilize a broadbased constituency representing the diversity of interests effected by growth and development in Maryland. The 1,000 Friends support, advocate and promote revitalization and directed growth throughout Maryland and act to coordinate, expand and strengthen those efforts in all communities.
