Library Services
The Archives and Library of the Division of Historical and Cultural Programs is the state's principal repository for information about Maryland's architectural, archeological, and cultural resources. The archival collection includes survey documentation for archeological sites and historic properties listed in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties and the National Register of Historic Places.
Documentation files are maintained for more than 8,000 prehistoric and historic archeological sites, and for approximately 80,000 historic structures and sites. While archeological research files are restricted to use by qualified professionals, the architectural portion of the inventory is accessible to the public. Survey files typically include summary descriptions of the resource and a statement of significance, accompanied by maps, photographs, and sometimes drawings. In addition to site-specific files, the archive includes:
Maps of historic resources, using 7.5' USGS topographic quads;
Copies of approximately 250 historic maps from throughout Maryland;
Black-and-white photographs, negatives, and color slides of individual sites and districts;
Architectural drawings; and
Architectural and archeological research reports for sites in Maryland and neighboring states.
Books, Journals, and Other Collections
The library has professional journals to assist staff and clients in reseach, as well as approximately 3,500 books dealing primarily with archeology (terrestrial and maritime), Native Americans, architecture, history, historic preservation, decorative arts, building conservation and technology, and bibliography as they relate to Maryland and surrounding regions.
Other collections include historic structure reports, plans (development plans, town plans, etc.), extensive vertical files, and videos.
(Please note: The Maryland Historical Trust Library does not include genealogical research materials. For genealogical matters, please visit either the Maryland State Archives or the Maryland Historical Society Library).
Databases and Microform
Databases have been created for the historic map collection and for the archeology sites. Future plans call for databases for the nearly 100,000 slides in the library and for the photographic collection.
One may view on microfilm/fiche the following:
County inventories for architectural sites;
HABS Survey: Maryland Collection (photos and text through 1988);
County tax assessments of 1783;
