Stories of the Chesapeake Heritage Area
 Goals
The counties of Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne's, and Talbot will promote heritage tourism development that helps to diversify the region's economy while protecting, preserving and enhancing the coveted way of life, unique heritage and unmatched natural, cultural, and historic resources of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Location
Few regions of Maryland are better suited for heritage development than Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne's, and Talbot Counties on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The natural, cultural, and historic resources are plentiful, the leadership is committed, and state and local partners can expect to see a measurable return on their investment in the growing business of heritage tourism, a critical part of the region's economic vitality.
With six National Historic Landmarks, six historic districts, and hundreds of other resources listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the proposed Eastern Shore Heritage Region is rich in historic resources. The region also possesses one National Wildlife Refuge, three Natural Resource Management Areas, two state Wildlife Management Areas, four state parks, one state demonstration forest, noted privately run nature centers, and a myriad of local parks. Among its rich array of cultural resources, the region boasts one of the nation's oldest universities; arts councils, education centers, and galleries; numerous museums; five historical societies; and many civic organizations and citizen groups with a tradition of celebrations and hard work to improve their communities.
Management
Eastern Shore Heritage, Inc., a private nonprofit organization, works to preserve the “Eastern Shore experience” by promotion, economic enhancement, and development through heritage tourism and stewardship of the natural, cultural, and historic resources of Maryland's Eastern Shore. The board of Eastern Shore Heritage, Inc., represents community organizations, private businesses, private citizens, and the interests of public agencies at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels that are dedicated to community development and planning, historic preservation, and environmental stewardship.
Management Plan
Preparation of a management plan approved by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority is a requirement for becoming a Maryland “Certified” Heritage Area. The approved Management Plan includes information on the boundaries of the Certified Heritage Area and “Target Investment Zones,” and presents the heritage area’s vision and goals and the strategies, projects, programs, actions, and partnerships that will be implemented to accomplish them.
