The Certified Local Government Grant Program

Eligibility to compete for Certified Local Government (CLG) Subgrant funds is one of the benefits provided to local governments who participate in the Certified Local Government Program -- a federal/state/local preservation partnership. Like the Maryland Non-Capital Grant Program, CLG funds provide support for research, survey, planning, and educational activities involving architectural, archeological, or cultural resources. CLG grant funds may be used for a wide variety of projects that assist local governments in protecting historic resources, including architectural, archeological, or cultural resource surveys, National Register nomination development, preservation plans, and public education programs. CLG subgrants are available to local governments on a 60/40 matching basis, requiring the applicant to cover only 40% of the total project cost. Funding for the 2007 grant round totaled $63,660.00; click here for the list of 2007 awardees; click here for the 2006 awardees.

Individual CLG grant awards generally range from $5,000 to $25,000, with the average award in FFY 2007 being approximately $10,900. The maximum CLG grant award is $25,000.

Projects are evaluated competitively and awards are made on an annual cycle. For FFY 2008 funding, applications will become available in October 2007 with completed applications due on February 29, 2008. Funds will become available once a CLG has signed a grant contract with MHT. This generally occurs by the start of the state fiscal year on July 1. For more information or to obtain a CLG grant application, contact Nicole Diehlmann, Administrator of Statewide Preservation Programs, at (410) 514-7625.
