July 1-5Public Archeology Program at JPPM. Interested in Archeology? Come join a hands-on opportunity to work with archeologists excavating an early 18th century site on Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum property. Volunteers will work in the field on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday sessions, and will wash, label and catalogue artifacts on Tuesday and Thursday sessions. Reservations required. Volunteers are needed to assist Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum staff and Master Gardener volunteers in the restoration of the Point Farm Gardens to their splendor following the original plan of noted landscape architect Rose Greely. 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Gain practical learning experience as you participate in hands-on activities such as longhouse maintenance, making and repairing primitive tools, and daily life activities and skills. Free, all ages, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

July 10War of 1812 Speaker Series, Part 3 of 5. Guest speaker Ralph Eshelman, maritime historian and paleontologist, will present “Battlefields, Skirmishes and Encampments: Remnants of the War of 1812 in Maryland.” Open to the public, 7:00 p.m., Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum. July 12Point Farm House & Garden Tour. Join Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum for a guided tour of Point Farm, estate home and retreat of the late Mr. & Mrs. Jefferson Patterson. Built in 1932, this Colonial Revival brick house was designed by noted female architect Gertrude Sawyer. The gardens are being faithfully restored based on the original plans by landscape architect Rose Greely. Fee: $10/person, $8 Seniors (Age 55+), 2:00 p.m., ages 10 and older. Reservations required. July 19Cattail Mat Workshop. Mats are used to sit on, sleep on, and as covering for lodges in our Eastern Woodland Indian Village. July 26If These Bricks Could Talk: A Tour of the Smith’s St. Leonard Archeological Site. A look at the discovery and the investigation at Smith’s St. Leonard, 18th century plantation archeological site at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum. Free, 11:00 a.m., all ages, Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum.

August 10Early American Life: Demonstrations of Crafts and Skills. Spend an afternoon learning how folks lived in Southern Maryland in the early 19th century. Free, all ages, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum.

The Maryland Historical Trust, in conjunction with the Maryland Humanities Council, the State Highway Administration, and Preservation Maryland, will hold a grants workshop from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Dorchester County Historical Society, 902 La Grange Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21613 (410-228-7953).

September 20-21War of 1812 North American Grand Tactical: Battle of St. Leonard Creek. The Grand Tactical is the largest War of 1812 Reenactment in North America. Close to 1,000 reenactors from across the United States and Canada will fill Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum for this two-day event that alternates between historic sites across North America. Visitors will enjoy battle reenactments, historic crafts, tall ships, camp life, living history, and merchants, and hands-on activities. Come see what life would have been like on the Chesapeake in the early 1800s! Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission: Ages 13 and older, $7.00/day; children ages 12 and younger, free; Military ID, free.
