The Historical and Cultural Museum Assistance Grant Program

Heritage Museum Enhancement Grants are administered through the Historical and Cultural Museum Assistance Program. These grants are available to museums, operated by nonprofit organizations or local jurisdictions, that have been open to the public on a regular basis for three years. While the grants do not require matching funds, applicants who document diverse sources of support will be more competitive. The grants' main purpose is to identify and reward excellence in museum practice.

Museum Enhancement Grants are awarded based on excellence. The applications are clustered and ranked based on museum size. There are four categories:
  • Small Community Museums* (budgets under $75,000)
  • Large Community Museums* (budgets from $76,000 to $200,000)
*Institutions that primarily serve a single community of users.
  • Regional Museums (budgets from $201,000 to $700,000)
Museums that usually serve audiences beyond a single geographic center.
  • Statewide Museums (budgets over $701,000)
Institutions with a mission to serve a broad, statewide audience.
